The 9-tooth side has wider gaps between teeth to work through dense, knotted sections without snapping hair. Use it first when the coat has tangles. The 17-tooth side packs more teeth into the head to catch and lift loose undercoat fibers after tangles are cleared. Running both sides in sequence gives a more thorough groom than either side alone.
A wider head covers more coat area per stroke, which reduces the total number of passes needed to work through a large dog or thick coat. This is especially useful during seasonal blowouts when shed volume is high and long sessions tire both pet and owner. Fewer repetitive passes also reduce the chance of over-raking sensitive skin.
